Tunde and Jack Come to Temecula

Tunde and Jack came for a brief afternoon visit today. We did get to show them a bit of our lives here and we were certainly very happy to have them here. Gabi served lecso for lunch (my favorite Hungarian food!). They got to see the wineries, the town and the kids. A lot for a few hours.

The Dismal Science, Not!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

In another universe, I finished my dual BA in physics and economics and went on to study the things that Alex Tabarrok does (I only got the degree in physics). Or I took the scholarship I was offered from Washington University in St. Louis to research appropriate Third World development technologies, which would have put me in much the same place.

I think I’m happier doing what I do now, but I do like to follow these folks’ work. My morning reading includes the Marginal Revolution (co-written by Alex) and Freakonomics blogs, amongst others.

Consider me a fan.

Upgraded server

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Having just upgraded my laptop to Jaunty Jackapole (which was screamingly successful), I decided to upgrade my aging server system from 6.06 to 8.04 (Hardy Heron). If you get problems working on steussy.com (or our other sites), please email me immediately.

UPDATE: Wow. Hit me with a hammer on the head the next time I have a bright idea like this one. Everything worked when I went to play with kids around 3pm Sunday. At bath-time (7pm) I found email had broken since 5:30pm. I had to reinstall everything from scratch, then transfer files individually from my backup disks. Well, at least we have a more modern server now. You, my friends, will not notice the difference.

Welcome to Hardy Heron.

Gabi’s Rose Bushes

Every year, Gabi’s rose bushes bloom around our gazebo. For two or three months starting now, the gazebo is surrounded by colors and scents to entertain me while I’m reading outside or watching the kids play. It’s great fun.

I’ve read longer, more insightful stories on the back of a Cracker Jack’s box. Fun shooting zombies, though.

Camilla’s First Reading Book

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Camilla just finished her first reading book – all 120 pages of it. It’s a shared book from Temecula Montessori, so we don’t get to keep it. I thought I’d take a few photos of the pages just to show off the work that Camilla has done over the last four months.

The first seven pages took us four days to complete, then she did the next seven pages in one day. Wow! After that, it was in fits and spurts. Very good job, Camilla!

Garage Sale

I AM NOT A GEEK! (but this is my garage sale). Half of the driveway is covered with monitors, PC’s, Mac’s, printers and keyboards. I was unable to find homes for most of it, so they went to the Riverside Technology Recycling truck.
