Obama Health Care Costs

Monday, November 30th, 2009

family_planWhere do I sign up?

As an entrepreneur, my costs are FAR GREATER than any of these figures. I worked out our 2009 fees to just under $14,000. And the legislation clearly points out that my group (independent individuals and families) are the ones most screwed by the current health insurance regime. This has my enthusiastic, I-want-it-now vote.

Figure above is from the Congressional Budget Office, from a report here. Hat tip to Paul Krugman, here.

NFL Week 12

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

nfl_week_12I haven’t won yet, but it looks pretty good. There are two games left to play, PIT vs. BAL and NE vs. NO. I only need to win one of these games to take the football pool. If I lose both, then the pool goes to Mom, with Cally in a close run for second place.

UPDATE: Mom wins! (Dang it!)

My grandfather is the child on the left in both photos. Dates are approximate. Their mother, Maria, died when Leroy was only seven months old. Leroy was adopted by his aunt, Anna Steussy and her husband Paul Kubli. Father Henry and the two sons left for South Dakota, but returned after a few years to New Glarus. Father Henry remarried to Ellen Kundert Steussy of New Glarus. Click through to see more. (more…)

Steussy Family Tree

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Steussy_family_tree Click on the above image for a full size view. This is the Steussy family tree based on our gatherings this Thanksgiving weekend. More photos and information later.

The tree starts with Melchoir Steussy (1823-1897) for a good reason. When he immigrated in 1845, the immigration officials misspelled his last name of Stüssi. Everyone alive with the last name Steussy, with that particular spelling, is a descendant of Melchoir and one of his ten children. Our oldest photos (located here) show Henry Steussy, his ninth child and my great-grandfather.

I fully expect there are many errors here. Please send corrections to me at ed “at” steussy.com (more…)

Gabi serves Thanksgiving Dinner 2009

Thanksgiving Dinner was excellent! Thanks to everyone who came. On the serving cart, we had the following: (Top shelf) Hungarian cabbage in the blue bowl, turkey (one plate dark meat, one plate white meat), Gabi’s fruit stuffing from inside the bird, rolls and Gabi’s stuffing from outside the bird. (Middle shelf) Dan’s cornbread stuffing, Hungarian mayo salad, spiced squash (!!). (Bottom shelf) sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes.

Not shown are the homemade cranberry sauce, gravy, apple pie, Lintz cookies, coconut pastries, Charlotte cake (these two courtesy Anikó), beer/wine/gin courtesy of Chris and Dan and lots of other stuff as well.

It was a great time!
