Report from Indianapolis

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I posted photos last night before I dragged myself, exhausted, into bed. These last two days, I have had 3 hours and 5 hours of sleep so last night was make-up time for me.

Mom is doing extremely well at her Moving Forward apartment in Zionsville Meadows. Her physical and occupational therapy has been giving her lots of strength. She is certainly at least as strong and mobile as Dad is, if not better at this point.

The highlight of the trip so far was Wednesday’s visit to Community North Hospital for an ultrasound. After it was done, a little after ten, Mom and I went to the condo at Talliho for the first time since her crash in October. We arrived and Mom immediately got out of the car, climbed the three stairs into the house (“My therapist would be so proud of me!”) and went inside. Dad was still asleep, so Mom’s first order of business was waking him up.

I cooked a breakfast of fried eggs, coffee and Mom made toast for all three of us. We sat around the table and talked for about 45 minutes before Mom felt it was time for her to leave. It was a marvelous little visit, and both Mom and Dad said separately how much they enjoyed it.

Last night, Tom made a great dinner of hamburgers, soup and salad. Dad and I braved the cold, snow and wind to head over there. Gabi and my family joined us on Skype for part of the evening. I wish I could record those conversations. It was particularly impressive that throughout the  conversations, all five of my family managed to stay in-screen. And it was very cute when Helen took my laptop around the house to show her decorations – then Gabi took her laptop and gave a similar tour of her work in California.  I love Skype.

Today, I will follow Mom to her dialysis center then leave to do numerous errands. There are light bulbs to change, pictures to frame and hang, food to buy, etc. Tomorrow, the main event will be dinner at Tom and Helen’s with both Mom and Dad in attendance.
