January Wagon

January Wagon

It’s that time of year again! This will be my seventh year to spend January completely avoiding alcohol; be it wine, beer or martinis. The first time I took a month off, it was March 1997. I proceeded to do it every now and then, usually in February (it’s a short month, right?), until my sister Cally told me she made it an annual New Year’s resolution. I thought that was a good idea, and I’ve been on the January Wagon every year since 2004.

What’s it like? I think more clearly. I lose weight during the month. Keeping up with my exercise schedule (every other day 3 mile jog) is easier. And I save about a hundred dollars that would otherwise be spent on alcohol (I only drink at home these days, folks). And I feel more in control of myself and my destiny.

I learned a long time ago that I enjoy most those things that are considered difficult in life (starting businesses, learning languages, etc.). Not drinking for a month doesn’t come close to the other challenges, but it does feed the same need. Recommended.
