Massachusetts Vote

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

This one hurt. Ted Kennedy is spinning in his grave. And I personally felt someone’s hand on my wallet.

It’s all about Health Care. Let’s go over the impossibilities now. The House has a chance to pass the Senate version of the bill unchanged. Unfortunately, this would leave all of the Senate pork intact (and there was a lot of it, ask anyone in Nebraska). And none of the House pork would be there, so they have little reason to vote for it other than the kindness of their hearts.

The Republicans will not welcome a bipartisan solution after this victory; they smell blood in the water. They think that the next round of elections this Fall will overturn Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate if they do what they just did; running against Obamacare.

There are a lot of good reasons to dislike Obama’s Health Care plan, not least the political deals made Democrat-to-Democrat in getting the thing done, simply because individuals saw it was in their power to insist on their pound of flesh. It was ugly.

But something really needs to be done. Even if our health insurance only rises by eleven percent a year, as it did this year, we will soon see it as the biggest part of our budget. Bigger than the cost of the house we own. Bigger than anything in the business. Just compounding our current rates, not accounting for the vast change we will face when I turn 50 in three years, here is what we will have:

2010     $15,400
2011     $17,094
2012     $18,974

2013     $21,062  I turn 50 this year, so we will face a diametric increase in our rates. For simplicity, I am sticking with the 11% increases here.

2014     $23,378

2015     $25,950  This is the year medical costs of our healthy family will exceed our mortgage.

2016     $28,804
2017     $31,973
2018     $35,490

This is not a good thing, Massachusetts. Not a good thing at all.

Gabi’s Lego Village

Is there any room at the inn?

One of the Christmas presents from Uncle Nic was an extremely complicated Lego set for Dan-dan. Unfortunately, putting it together was a bit beyond his abilities quite yet. Gabi, on the other hand, had no trouble getting it put together over a three day period of time. Cool stuff!

What's that yellow cloud on the left?

Rainy Week in Temecula

Monday, January 18th, 2010

It’s the start of seven, eight or nine days of rain for Southern California today. Up to 20 inches expected — as much as we normally get in a year.

So, what to do with the kids? Jump in puddles, of course!

Football Update

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Only three games left to go. Still alive are Minnesota (Cally), New Orleans (Dad), Indianapolis (Mom) and the New York Jets (me).

We’ve only had two good games during the post-season: Green Bay vs. Arizona and Jets vs. San Diego. The others have been blowouts. Next week’s games should be better.

Whatever the outcome of the Jets-Indianapolis game, I’ll be happy. If the Jets win, I have a pool team in the Superbowl. If Indy wins, I have them in the Superbowl. Win-win. Personally, I want to see Favre and Manning in the Superbowl, but that’s just me.

Xbox Failure

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I will personally attest to the Xbox problem. My 1.5 year old Xbox is now out of warranty. While Microsoft will offer service after that period for some failures, it won’t for what I have (DVD drive failure). Further, rather than make the DVD drives easily replaceable, there is an absurdly complicated system of DVD drive identity matching. I’ve worked for three weeks now to replace or repair the drive on mine with no luck at all.

I received a copy of Dragon Age: Origins for Christmas. It is now the 15th of January, and I haven’t played a minute of it because of the Xbox. Every other digital piece in my house (and there are a lot of them) has been kept up-to-date either with warranty repairs or my personal service. Not the crappy Microsoft Xbox 360. I’ll keep that in mind when I look for a replacement.

Full copy of the poster this comes from is available at my professional blog, here.

Superbowl Party

Friday, January 15th, 2010

There’s one party I won’t make it to, but have to write about. If all the plans go well (and that’s a big if), Mom and Dad will be together at Zionsville for Superbowl Sunday, with all of their furniture and a big flat screen TV. Time for a Superbowl party!

I’d love to be there. The parents follow football religiously, so they’re up on all of the team statistics and stories, reaching back for decades. If you’re around Indianapolis, it would be a great place to go watch the game.

Football Weekend

Friday, January 15th, 2010

It’s a big weekend in football. First, the Arizona Cardinals (Gabi) fly to New Orleans to meet the Saints (Dad). Will father of seven children, geezer quarterback extraordinaire Kurt Warner have the same amazing day he had last week (33 passes, with more touchdowns than incompletions). Wow.

Next comes the Baltimore Ravens (Andy) vs. the Indianapolis Colts (Mom). Go Mom! Go Colts!

Sunday finds us with Dallas (Gabi) vs. Minnesota (Cally). Again, one of our favorite geezer quarterbacks is there, Brett Favre. But Dallas has been hot through December, so it will be a fight. Go Dallas!

Sunday afternoon will find us with the Jets (Ed) visiting San Diego (Rich). It’s not often you see a rookie quarterback this deep into the playoffs, but the Jets’ Mark Sanchez has held up very well so far. Let’s see if he can go further.

On one other note, the Wall Street Journal ran a numbers article on professional football. There are only eleven minutes of actual playing time in each game. On average, the networks spend 50% of their non-commercial time showing people just standing around. Only a very, very short time is spent on cheerleaders. Clearly something is wrong here. Article can be found at this link.

The Hurt Locker review

Hurt Locker Poster - from a gripping moment early in the film

Gabi and I saw the Hurt Locker last night – wow. Great storytelling. The suspense starts within five minutes and builds in a very Hitchcock-like style. Minimal special effects. Great acting. Great staging. I hope it wins a few Oscars.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

A Present for Camilla

Last Fall, we nearly lost my mother. She was admitted to a hospital, coded, received bad cardiac tests, was repeatedly given insulin despite clear evidence that her body couldn’t handle it and generally was ill-served by the medical community. The only voice of reason came from my brother, Nic, the former family physician-turned-biophysics-researcher. Mom might have survived the ill treatment of the doctors without him, but I sure wouldn’t want to gamble on it. I decided that in light of this experience, I would gently nudge one or more of my offspring into the family business: medicine.

The original thought had been a signup sheet outside my office door, “Who is going to be the doctor this week?” This failed when I presented it at dinner and asked who was going to be the first on the signup sheet and three of them raised their hands (Veronica didn’t since she’s not raising hands yet). I decided not to be so subtle.

Is Dr. Camilla Observing Sterile Technique Here?

Hence, a game of Operation for Camilla at Christmas! Realistic medical facts and situations, like surgically removing a bird from somewhere around the brain. The gentle art of extracting a rubberband leg bone without touching the electrically sensitive edges of the opening. Just the thing!

Don’t laugh too hard now. It just might work!
