Pappy’s Football Injury

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Pappy’s vet has told us that Pappy has a football injury – a torn ACL. Probably injured during a morning jog with me, we’d been encouraging Pappy to exercise when he was lame. Wrong thing to do, says the vet. He needs rest. 90 days of not chasing rabbit, no jogging and no unnecessary walking.

On a scale of 1 to 4, with 1 the least bad and 4 the worst, Pappy’s ACL is rated at 1.5. Painful, but manageable.

Presents on birthday

Gabi’s birthday was a great success! Here she is in the backyard, unwrapping a gift.

Retired Pappy leads Camilla on walk

Pappy, at 9 and a half years old, is now officially retired from jogging. He’s been slower and slower since February. Today, he took everyone on an off-the-leash walk through our jogging grounds. Camilla was the only one to keep up with him.

Felix, 1997 to 2010

Coincidentally, about two hours after I posted Pappy’s retirement, I learned that Felix, my brother’s dog, had passed away. Goodbye, Felix.

Historic Steussy Photos

In addition to the standard photos that line halls of the Freitag Farm, there was a collection of photos from Aunt Ruth. I captured quite a few of them. The one above is from somewhere else entirely, the collection of Ruth (Steussy) Rondeau of Minnesota. These photos take awhile to process, so don’t expect too many of them to show up.

Trees

Aaron runs and plays during the tree plantings

We planted two trees for Dad on Saturday evening, around 4:30pm. One is an oak tree to symbolize Dad as the tall, shading institution that he was. The other is a cherry tree, to match his brother Robin’s crabapple tree planted next to it.

In front is the hole for Dad's cherry tree. Behind is a large stump that was removed. Right is Robin's crabapple tree.

Afterwards, time for grandpuppy play on the grounds.

Calvin Steussy: Burial

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

We returned from New Glarus this morning at 3:30am. I have a treasure trove of images, videos and documents to share. Since I’m traveling again at the end of this week, it may be ten days or more before the best of these gets published.

Dad’s burial was at 10am, Saturday July 24, at the Swiss Reformed Cemetery in New Glarus, Wisconsin. A tent stands over the proceedings to protect from sun or rain. The location is perfect — on top of a low hill, immediately adjacent to Dad’s mother and father (Helen Freitag Steussy and Edwin Emil Steussy).

The roses, red and white for the University of Wisconsin, are ready. The urn is a polished rosewood box. Click below for more photos.

After services, a look at Steussy's from the past. Here rests Maria Steussy, died of TB at age 23 in 1898. Mother to three boys, including Grandfather Edwin and Great Uncle Henry.

Chris looks at the tombstone of Melchoir Steussy, the first Steussy. Note the tombstone was raised by Melchoir's son Jacob, who changed the spelling of his name.
